After only recently jumping on the twitter bandwagon, I’ve got to admit, it’s a useful and easy way to promote any updates to my blog or articles I’ve written. Here are a few steps to increase your followers.

Sign up for an account over at Twiends or simply sign in with your twitter account. The interface is really easy to navigate and you’ll be increasing your following in no time. If you find you can’t follow anyone straight away, this could be down to how new your twitter is or how many followers/tweets/lists you have. Increasing these increases your twust score, which is Twiends’ indication of how trustworthy your Twitter feed is. Sound complicated? Read on!

The website basically uses its own kind of currency called seeds, which can be purchased for a hefty sum, or earned by following other people. It’s wise to follow those of the same interests because you’re more likely to have them follow you back, plus your feed won’t be full of random junk. You can earn from one to nine seeds following someone, and offer the same amount for users to follow you. I don’t agree with purchasing the seeds, because essentially you’re just purchasing followers, who unfortunately could all just un-follow you the next day. But the site is helpful for slowly increasing your blog’s growth.

At first I was slightly dubious as to whether this was ethical or even worthwhile, but you can adjust the type of people allowed to follow you. For instance, you can filter out those who have high drop rates (i.e. who follow users and soon un-follow them) or those that have only joined in the last hour or two days. This way you can be sure that legitimate people are following you, while you find interesting people in your own interests to follow. Using this method consistently could potentially increase your following by thousands per day!

Here’s another tip, if you’re following users just to hopefully receive a follow back, make sure you’re choosing the right users. For instance, a user following 1,000 with 1,200 followers is more likely to follow you back than a user following 400 with 20,000 followers. You could also look into some reading material for building followers, like here. They're pretty cheap but I haven't tried it, let me know if you do!

My final tip is not to bother with DMs (Direct Messages). They’re annoying, unhelpful and can put a user off following you instantly.

Although useful methods to increase your twitter following, websites like Twiends are sure to become more popular. This means the current way we use Social Networking to determine the quality of a page could soon be meaningless. I mean, what’s the point if everyone’s got billions of followers just to promote websites? Well anyway, I’d look into this now while it’s popular, good luck!

If you'd like to read more about how Twitter can be an incredibly useful tool for marketing your blog, feel free to check out this article, which I wrote recently for you beautiful people.

Stressed at the office? Bills piling up? We all need to take a break from our daily routines and chill out so here are five great songs to make you feel marvellous! A guest post, courtesy of James Laverty.

Now if anyone else is like me, they can admit that they sometimes feel down and need cheering up. In my experience, the best way to cheer yourself up is through the power of music, so I have composed this list of 5 songs which I think make you feel good about yourself. In no way am I saying that these songs are the definitive feel good songs, they just happen to be some of the tunes which I would suggest to make yourself feel better.

    5. Bright Eyes, Bowl of Oranges
This song is just so bouncy and positive and is clearly one of Conor Obersts finest works. It is simple, beautiful and in my opinion, very hopeful. Whenever I have problems in my life I just listen to this song and it makes me feel so much better.

    4. Supergrass, Alright
This classic 90’s song is an ultimate feel good tune. Just the opening piano makes you want to get up and dance. It also has one hell of a catchy pop chorus which can’t help but make you smile!

    3. Brendan Benson, What I’m looking for
This is one of my personal favourite songs ever, and for good reason! Does anyone really know what they’re looking for? This song just says that ‘no, we don’t, but life is still good so don’t give up’. It’s a fantastic song and this song in particular just shows how much of a lyrical genius Brendan is.

    2. Jeremy Messersmith, Tatooine
It was this song that actually got me into Jeremy, and I’m so grateful I did! Jeremy has so many uplifting songs and this one in particular is one of his best! Using the fictional star wars planet of Tatooine as a metaphor of love is such a brilliant idea, and I think many of people can really relate to this song. The video for this song happens to a masterpiece in its own right, retelling the story of the original Star Wars trilogy.

    1.Weezer, Island In The Sun
Although some may argue that this is not an actual ‘happy song’, I think that there are 2 ways to look at this song. The way I choose to look at it is that sometimes things do go wrong in life which can bring you down, but there is always somewhere you can to make you feel better, be that an actual island in the sun, or a more personal island, such as just hanging with your friends and loved ones. I would also like to state that the exceptionally adorable video for this song is also a feel good factor by itself, and the song and video work perfectly together.

After realising that I didn’t have enough experience with web design when I bought my domain, I decided that I would continue to let Blogger host it for me, for now, and see how it goes. I think the service so far is great and I’ve had no problems.

    Pros:

Free hosting. Although it’s decreased in price over the last few years, website hosting can still bite into your cash, as you could be spending anywhere from two quid to twenty quid a month depending on the services you need. Blogger can host your blog for you, even on your own domain while redirecting your old .blogspot URL.

No experience needed. The small amounts of HTML and CSS coding I know probably wouldn’t allow me to code my own website and beginners certainly wouldn’t stand a chance. You can find lots of professional looking and easily customisable templates on the web for Blogger.

Easy to use. Creating your blog isn’t the only easy part. Maintaining it is also a walk in the park. Posting content, setting up adverts, creating pages etc. are all incredibly easy and the interface itself is easy to navigate.

Free Analytics. The only thing Bloggers enjoy more than writing spectacular content (hopefully) are their stats. Blogger offers completely free analytics so you can monitor your page views and where they’re coming from, your referring URLs and websites and can even tell you how much money your adverts are making!

    Cons:

Custom widgets can be difficult. To fully customise your blog, you’ll need to get your head around custom widgets and/or hacks, i.e. related posts, share buttons, if you want to make your site more professional. There’s lots of help on the internet though so it shouldn’t be too hard.

Navigation bar unappealing. Even with your own domain, that navigation bar will appear above your blog, unless you fancy removing it with a bit of coding.

There are limits. At the end of the day, Blogger is for blogs, so if you’re looking for more than that, you may want to begin learning some coding.

All in all, I think Blogger is ideal for beginners and I plan on sticking with it for a while although if you’re looking to fully customise your site and are prepared to pay, WordPress is probably the way to go!

I’ve been quite interested on the topic of lucid dreaming for a while now and have been itching to write down my thoughts about it. A lucid dream involves the dreamer being conscious that they are dreaming in one of either two ways. The first starts as a normal dream until the dreamer ultimately concludes it is a dream, due to perhaps circumstances that seem far too unreal. This is known as DILD, a dream-initiated lucid dream. The second, known as WILD, a wake-initiated lucid dream, occurs when the dreamer goes from a waking state to a dream state with no lapse in consciousness.

After it came up in conversation a while ago, I found hardly any of my friends had experienced, or even heard of the concept. I’ve experienced a few that I can remember and when asked what I did during these dreams, a bewildered look of disappointment appeared on their faces most likely because I didn’t do something one would most likely attempt, like flying or picking a fight with your boss. In fact all I can remember doing in these dreams was telling people that I was dreaming while they laughed at me. I think the reason I didn’t attempt to do something that defied physics was because the discovery I had made seemed like the greater thrill.

The first lucid dream I experienced must have been in primary school. Our classroom had been turned into our local church and myself and my classmates were doing our work like normal on these church benches. Even though most of our dreams seem realistic while dreaming, but when we wake up they seem ridiculous, for some reason I stopped observing the dream and suddenly had a conscious control over myself. “This is a dream!” I shouted, confusing my classmates. I ran around telling them they didn’t have to work because it was just a dream and we should go out and play. But, even though it was my own subconscious, they chose to ignore me and carry on working, while my teachers told me to sit back down. I remember feeling so alive and more awake than in real life, at which point I woke up, completely forgetting about what had happened until remembering late afternoon.

    How to Induce Lucid Dreams

I’ve done a bit of research on how to induce lucid dreaming but since my last one, a year ago while on holiday, I haven’t been able to force one upon myself. Here a few tips about inducing them:

The first step to induce lucid dreaming is by having a good dram recall. Dream recall is the ability to remember your dreams. Seeing as we could more than 10 dreams per night, no wonder people find it difficult to remember just one of them. Having a good recall increases your awareness of dreams, which can be improved by keeping a dream journal. After waking, try writing down anything you can remember about your dreams. This will help to show patterns in your dreams, for instance recurring places or people or objects that appear so you will be more likely to associate these things with a dream.

Reality checking can also help to induce lucid dreams. If you do discover recurring themes or objects, as noted above, then you must ask yourself if you’re dreaming if you spot one of them in real life. Say for instance you always dream about Kelly Brook, who doesn’t? If you see her in real life, which may be unlikely, ask yourself if you are dreaming. Hopefully this technique will carry on into your dreaming state, giving you the opportunity to decide whether you are actually dreaming.

Dr Stephen LaBerge is noted as a leader in the study of lucid dreaming. One of his techniques entitled MILD, mnemonically induced lucid dream, involves spending a little time every night doing an affirmation or visualization that you will have a lucid dream as you fall asleep. LaBerge has also proposed two ways to prolong a lucid dream. The first technique is spinning one's dream body. He proposed that when spinning, the dreamer is engaging parts of the brain that may also be involved in REM activity, helping to prolong REM sleep. The second technique is rubbing one's hands. The intention is to engage the dreamer's brain in producing the sensation of rubbing hands, preventing the dreamer becoming aware of the sensation of lying in bed. LaBerge tested his hypothesis by asking 34 volunteers to either spin, rub their hands, or do nothing. Results showed 90% of dreams were prolonged by hand rubbing and 96% prolonged by spinning. Only 33% of lucid dreams were prolonged with taking no action.

I plan to write more on this topic and if any of you have experienced lucid dreaming feel free to tell me about it!

Here's an intersting article about how to manage your time when trying to increase your blog traffic. You don't have to stick to the exact schedule but you can see there's more to just focusing on writing content for your blog. You can find the article at Daily Blog Tips here, How To Increase Blog Traffic.
For those who don’t know, traffic is essentially just visitors to your blog. Here’s 20 free ways to promote your blog and increase its traffic!

    1. Post Quality Content.

The first and foremost step to getting visitors to your blog is by posting valuable content. Don’t write for computers or search engines, write for humans. People should be able to get a sense of you from your posts and be able to relate. Another tip would be to write content which won't be outdated next week or next year, so people will still be searching for articles you've writtin in 2050.

    2. Post Frequently.

Posting quality content is great. Posting quality content once a year isn’t. You have to post frequently. Simple as that. Don't spend all your time writing for your blog though, you need to manage time between making content and marketing content.

    3. Submit to search engines

This should have been the first thing you do, but if you haven’t already; submit your blog URL to all major search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing etc. If your blog ain’t listed in one of them there search engines you may’s well erase it from internet history.

    4. Submit your articles.

Another useful way to get people over to your blog is by posting your articles on websites such as Reddit or Digg. Be careful though, you don’t want to submit every single thing you write, only those whimsical ones that stand out. Also, you should encourage others to submit your articles using share buttons, as mentioned below. If you do get your article on the front page of say Digg for example, be sure to follow it up with a few more good posts. You don’t want a surge of viewers on your blog to find out you haven’t updated in a few days.

    5. Submit to directories.

A blog directory is a database of submitted blogs separated into categories. A quick Google search shows just how many are out there but to get your blog onto one of the more reliable ones, you may have to pay a onetime fee or include a link to the directory on your own blog. One link in return for potential traffic sounds like a good deal to me. For beginners, I’ve found a list of 20 Directories you should submit your blog to, here.

    6. Ad/link Sharing.

Link sharing involves you advertising or linking another website on your blog, while they link to you on theirs. This method might not be the most effective way to attract new visitors, especially if the ones linking to yours have absolutely nothing in common with your own.

    7. Social Networking.

Everyone’s a member of at least one social network these days, whether it be Facebook, MySpace or Twitter, it doesn’t matter, you can use any of these to promote your blog. I’ve got almost 500 friends on Facebook which equals 500 potential visitors. Just Link them to your blog in a status or tweet it, but don’t overdo it, you don’t want to scare your friends off with hundreds of links a day. Here's a more in-depth guide to using Twitter to it's full potential to help your blog, http://www.blogdog.co.uk/2011/11/bloggers-guide-to-twitter.html.

    8. Include share buttons.

Some Blogging platforms include this feature but if you want to customize your share buttons, or if you don’t have any at all, I’d recommend AddThis. AddThis allows you to include over 300 share buttons in your post or in your header/footer. I’d recommend including Digg, Del.ic.ous, StumbleUpon, Twitter, Facebook Like, Google +1 and whatever else takes your fancy. This allows readers to easily share your content which hopefully will improve your traffic.

    9. Use SEO.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines. The first thing you can do to improve your page is by using Google Adwords, Keyword Tool. This allows you to record how many times a particular word or phrase is Googled each month, and how other similar keywords compare. You can this use this method to include specific keywords in your text. I’d recommend editing your old posts though because remember, you’re writing for humans not search engines, but this way it will get people to your website where they can read your newest material.

Another method is to add Meta Tags to your page, which could hopefully improve your position in a search engine. I’ve found a detailed guide to inserting meta tags here

    10. Buy your own domain.

Everyone likes free web hosting from blogging platforms like Blogger for instance. Free blog, free templates, easy customizable, just as long as you have .blogspot.com in your URL. To improve your chances of being found in search engines, consider buying your own domain. It’s really easy to redirect your old blog to your new one and sites such as Blogger can still host it for you was well.

    11. Include an RRS feed/follow with email.

Simple enough, this lets your readers follow you easily. Perhaps have a free newsletter or somethin’?

    12. Pray.

It’s been proven that praying gives a 10% chance of more visitors*. You can’t argue with the statistics.

    13. Include link in emails.

Just simply add your blog address to the bottom of your email and any other contact details you feel necessary.

    14. Use other forms of media.

Heard of Youtube? Try submitting content in the form of a video, just remember to include a link back to your blog. Mention boobs in the title and you’re sure to get a lot of views (and a lot of enemies). Unless your blog actually is about boobs, in which case feel free to link me.

    15. Add a Feed counter.

A Feed counter shows you and your viewers how many people have signed up to your feed. Don’t put one up straight away, wait till you gain a few hundred and then display it. People are more inclined to subscribe to your feed if there are a lot of other people doing it to, because it lets them know your blog is worth reading and isn’t basically shit.

    16. Comment/follow other blogs.

You should spend some of your time looking at other blogs, preferably related to your own, and comment or follow them. Make sure you write interesting comments and don’t just spam their box with ‘oh em geeeezzzz hey evryone! why dont ya go on my bolg instead myblogisoarsome.com!!!1!!one! tw@aol.com xxxx'. Do include a link if prompted though.

    17. Use Forums.

If you’re a frequent member of a particular forum, why not add your site URL to your signature. Again, don’t spam threads, just write as you normally would. This is an easy way to get people visiting your blog.

    18. Word of mouth.

Get talking, tell all your BFFs about your cracking new blog, tell your postman, your window cleaner, even your friendly neighbourhood Spiderman. Let the world know your blog is the next best thing since Nyan Cat. You could also include it on a business card.

    19. I couldn’t think of one for 19.

    20. Be annoying.

If you really want to improve on those viewing figures you could just go against everything I’ve said and be really annoying. Spam your URL everywhere; social networks, emails, forums, chatrooms, other blogs. Sure you’ll make no friends, but at least three more people are reading your blog each week!

*I may have made this up.

    July 12, 2011

So you’ve got your blog about 'Why Robot Wars should make a comeback' up and running and have decided it’s about time those eight views a day started earning you some money. Of course the first thing you should focus on before trying to make money is driving traffic to your website, the more viewers you have increases your potential earnings. You can read about increasing your traffic here.

    1. Advertise.

Possibly the easiest way to start earning from your website is by using Google AdSense, which provides revenue on a pay-per-click basis. Just sign up for an account with them and once approved, you can choose display their ads on your page. You can choose to let Google put up any advertisements or you can customize the look and size of them yourself. Matching the colours of the ad to your website makes it looks slightly less out of place and could potentially improve the amount of clicks you receive.

As with any ads, don’t overfill your page with ads, people may want to actually access your content without being prompted to shoot iPhones with a pellet gun. Also, be sure to read the terms and conditions of AdSense, which states you can’t have any competing products also advertised on the same web page, persuade your viewers to click the ads or click your own ads, but surely you’re not that desperate?

You can also sell ad-space to specific companies at a fixed rate cost per month, not from the amount of clicks they receive. Just make sure these advertisements aren’t promoting spam.

    2. Sell Products.

Another popular form of moneymaking online is selling your products. You hear about E-books all the time so what’s stopping you from making the next one? Once you’ve decided on a product, or products, to sell, you need to think about how much you’re going to charge and whether your viewers will actually be interested in purchasing them. Try offering a sample of the product for free. Also let people know if you’re prepared to offer them a full refund within so many days. This makes the potential buyer more inclined to purchase because they know there’s a risk free aspect.

    3. Affiliate Marketing.

Affiliate marketing is the process of advertising other people’s products or getting people to advertise your own. I’d suggest first creating a free account with ClickBank as an affiliate. Once signed up, you can browse the marketplace for products to advertise. You should advertise products related to your website for a better chance of your viewers clicking them. If someone does decide to purchase an item through your website, they will be taken to a referral URL where you’ll get paid a percentage of commission for selling their product.

    4. Donations.

If you choose not to purposely monetize your site, you could include a donation page when people can contribute any amount of money to you for all your hard work. If you’ve set up a PayPal account, they provide donation buttons which you can display on your page which is automatically linked to your account.

    5. Market your services.

Your blog doesn’t just have to make money online. What services could or do you provide in real life? It’s your own blog so you can essentially market your services for free. Good luck!
